Meet
the Heatwole Family
and "General Jackson"!
Meet the Heatwole Family that was here to marry of one of
their Kinfolk. One beautiful morning, as the family enjoyed
our "Breakfast to Remember" on our outside Paradise Cafe, Neil
(the little guy character with the no hair) mused,” Ahhh, the
only thing missing from this perfect gathering scene is the
house dog sitting next to us to pet!" Where-upon Wayne gave
some realistic barks from the kitchen while preparing their
Croissant French Toast and Stonewall Jackson Hash! Everyone
roared and other guests came running to the kitchen to see the
Stonewall Jackson Dog.
Wayne and "General Jackson"
Long story short, the family bought
us a wonderful house dog, which was quickly named "General
Jackson". He is easily cared for, very well behaved, and will
greet every guest on arrival as he has a permanent place in
the large living hall reception room, next to the guest book.
He barks on request and loves to be petted! Thanks to Neil
and the Heatwole family for giving us our wonderful "essential
house dog". He is great company and the health department
does not object to his being here! You will love General
Jackson too.

Wayne's Adventures

I'm Moving in With Audrey!!! I know you
remember Audrey, our beautiful and friendly ghost. Audrey was
the long time owner and Artist whose studio was in our Attic,
where she now resides. Her name is on the Attic door and her
undraped self-portrait hangs over the fireplace in the spacious
reception room just inside our front door. She is a very sweet
ghost but is a lovely mischievous gal who loves to play tricks
on us, like moving and hiding things from us. |
|

As I have retired from my clinical
practice, I am renovating Audrey's studio to make a
private Attic Office and personal area. It should turn out to
Audrey's satisfaction as it will have a wet bar, bath, skylights
and a 4th floor Crow's Nest Deck to enjoy an outdoor star gazing
vista and lounging area. To give you a glimpse, the pictures
show the work in progress. We hope that it should be completed
in a month or two, but renovating an old attic is a creative
design and architectural challenge as much has to be MacGyvered
"on-the-fly". Audrey and I are having a wonderful time and
adventure together, Thus it will have creativity and aesthetic
character in appearance and be functional for us as well. Of
course, we would be happy to show you our new digs when it is
done, so I will give you progress photos and reports along the
way.
Travel Tip
Vacationing with your pets can be extremely rewarding if you
take the time to do some research in advance. If your pets will
be staying with you in your room here are some of the questions
you should ask when making your reservation:
- Do they accept pets? Guide books and hotel directories are
a great resource, but pet policies change often so you should
always verify the current policy.
- Are there any pet fees or deposits? Are they per pet or
per room? Are they daily or one time only? Is the deposit
refundable?
- Am I limited to certain type rooms? Many places will
also limit you to a street view.
- Are there any areas that I can't go with my pet?
- Do they offer anything special for pets? There are places
that cater to those traveling with their pets, so it doesn't
hurt to ask. There are 5 star resorts that offer pet sitting,
pet walking, welcome gifts and room service items.

"15 Days at Stonewall Jackson Inn"
We are adding a
new feature to our website identified as "15 Days at
Stonewall Jackson Inn". Each "Day" shows an itinerary we
have recommended to guests. All have been ecstatic
about these day trips from the Inn. Here is one of the
super fine day trips that one might travel to see the
valley sites, and enjoy while staying with us.
- The Skyline Drive/Luray
Caverns/Blue Stone Inn
Big Meadows
Travel 33 east 25 miles to the Continental
Divide's Skyline Drive, recognized as being one of the
top 10 most beautiful roads in the United States. Enter
the Shenandoah National Park turning north, traveling
about 40 minutes on the beautiful Skyline Drive to Big
Meadows.
You cannot miss
'The Meadow.' The entire Big Meadows area is a mesa on
the mountain top. One end of this mesa is 'The Meadow,'
a large, open area carpeted with mosses, grasses,
wildflowers, and patches of dogwoods, under which, herds
of deer congregate. Ten Thousand years ago, this area
was used by the native Indians as productive hunting
grounds. More recently, in the 1930's, it was the
location of one of the largest CCC (Civilian
Conservation Corps) camps in the Park. Recognizing
that this could be a major tourist attraction, the NPS
(National Park Service) incorporated a complete lodging
facility in the area when it was deeded the land for
development into a National Park. The Meadow is there
for you to step into another world. Park your car and
take a walk.
Don't worry ...
you won't be walking on off-limits grounds.. The
Rangers encourage people to explore everywhere. .
Deer use these trails daily, so there are literally
hundreds of small trails in the Meadow to explore the
entire mesa. So follow their trails, it results in the
Meadow retaining its natural state. Be aware, however,
that during rainy periods, the lowest point of the
meadow turns into a swamp with ankle deep water and
muck. During that time, it is called 'Big Meadows Swamp'
---- something you don't expect to see at 3500 feet.

While hiking here,
you see deer and countless species of birds, so take
along our complimentary copy of our guide to "Virginia
Birding and Wildlife Trails". Breaths deeply, walk
slowly and enjoy the smells of hundreds of varieties of
wildflowers, thistle, and the wonderful scent of Pine.
You can also walk from here (12 miles, round trip) to
Hoover Camp, the summer home and the beautiful
Presidential Retreat on the Rapidian River. President
Hoover directed the Department of Interior to find a
site for a presidential retreat that was within two
hours of the White House, with a native trout stream
running through it and be mosquito free. It remained
the Presidential summer camp until Camp David was
constructed as a more proximate and a less rustic place
for the president to entertain guests.
Plan at least
one hour or so to walk and meander in the Big Meadow.
Being there at sunrise, or about an hour before
dusk, is when the highest populations of deer emerge
from the surrounding forest. During the summer, it is
not unusual to count between 10-100 deer grazing on the
Big Meadow at Dusk. As well, they are used to people
and one can approach to within a few feet of them. In
the winter and early spring, those counts diminish by
half or more.
The dining room at
Big Meadows Lodge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Feast your eyes on the scenic valley below, while
savoring an unforgettable meal of mountain favorites
like the Apple Smoked Pork Chop or (Teddy) Roosevelt's
Fried Chicken. Top it off with a local specialty,
blackberry ice cream pie. Enjoy the ambiance of the New
Market Taproom (in the dining room building) with a
specialty drink and family-friendly nightly
entertainment.

huge chambers to explore cathedral-sized rooms with
soaring ceilings, towering columns and breathtaking
stalactites, and gaze into mirror-perfect pools of clear
water. Knowledgeable guides will enrich your experience
with stories about the caverns' discovery and the
science behind the natural wonders being viewed. The
caverns also hold the world's only “Stalacpipe” Organ
that plays its hauntingly beautiful music on natural
formations.
