Donncha Ó Riain
A Forgotten Language is Rescued!
|
You may not know it,
but "Rosetta Stone" of Fairfield Language Technologies, is
located here in Harrisonburg. It is one of the Fortune
500's fastest growing companies in the nation providing
the best and most comprehensive learning/translation
instructional programs for the State Department
and Military as well as Universities and many foreign
countries. Recently, they contracted with Donncha O'Rian
in Ireland who has crucial and expert special knowledge in
the ancient Gaelic language of the British Islands. Donncha
was brought here from his dairy farm in Tipperary to write
the English-Gaelic learning/translation instructional
program for Rosetta's Stone. Dr. Craig Spaulding is
Fairfield’s Director of Rosetta Stone's effort to preserve
and make available the translation and learning of
endangered or extinct languages, a very worthy and noble
mission. He found Donncha in Ireland by accident during
his travels, but that's another story!
Donncha stayed with
us for the 3 weeks it took him and Craig to write the
difficult and extensive program, but were very
successful. Donncha literally worked day and night, with
time off to eat one of our delicious "Breakfasts to
Remember" every morning. During his stay he captivated
our guests with his Irish lilt and brilliance to the point
that we made him an honorary member of our Stonewall
Brigade. One just never knows who you will run into when
you stay here at the Inn.....last month is was Governor
Mark Warner on a bicycle trek, which dazzled the place
with his charismatic and commanding presence. This month
it was Donncha O'Rian, with his easy manner and
interesting expertise. He and Crag did take the last
Sunday off to go Rock Climbing before he had to return to
his Irish dairy farm, where he happily cares, for milks 60
cows every day. You guessed it... his special knowledge
of Gaelic is a life long hobby and noble effort of
interest and love.
We wish him well, ....he will return. I hope you get to
meet him.

Recipe of the Month
Slumbering Volcanoes
by Pond Mountain Lodge & Resort, Eureka
Springs, Arkansas
Ingredients
- 4 large tomatoes
- 4 canned artichoke hearts
- 4 eggs
- 4 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese
- 4 Tablespoons breadcrumbs seasoned with:
- 1 teaspoon dill
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Carefully scoop out insides of
tomatoes and drain juices from the shells. Place tomatoes, hole side
up, in baking dish and put in oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
Mix together Parmesan, breadcrumbs, dill, garlic, and onion powder.
Remove tomato shells from oven. Into the center of each put one whole
or 1/2 artichoke heart. Break one large egg over each artichoke heart
and then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of Parmesan and seasoned
breadcrumb mix.
Place "volcanoes" back into oven and bake for approximately 20
minutes. (Time depends on how you prefer eggs cooked... if you want
hard yolks, bake for 1/2 hour.) Serve hot with side condiments of sour
cream, chopped chives, green chili salsa, or others of your
imagination! |
