Brandi, a beautiful
bride or what! On the beach at sunset, as a trio
of native musicians strummed
guitars and sang ballads of love, vows of intimacy
and commitment were exchanged. Everybody cried, it was
oh SO romantic!! Do we look alike? We should! She is my
Grand Niece, my nephew Bob's daughter. She was swept away
by a handsome, gifted Chef and all around nice guy, name
of Charli. They are moving to Arlington, Virginia as
Brandi is entering George Washington University's doctoral
program in (you might have guessed it) Counseling
Psychology. It must be the family profession :-). She
will be a good one, I am very proud of her. She has the
Engel adventuresome spirit.
Of course, all this
happened in a posh, all inclusive, 5 star resort in Punta
Cana, DR. If you look closely, you will see I have a blue
wrist band on, which
means I can eat filet minion, enjoy the bar, and beach
party till I drop unconscious. Following my life's value
of moderation, I sampled a little of everything. (The
other beer is for a friend:-)) lolo

My professional life
there was manifested in being the coach and trainer of a
pick-up (from the bar) a pool volley ball team made up of
some alum frat guys from the Univ of Maryland, who were
having a men's only reunion vacation from their wives. We
had a very good time, and of course were the champs.

Innkeeper News

"Wonder Woman"

Frances, Tanja and and Mildrey
Her name is Frances
(also know as "Wonder Woman") as she flies around the Inn and does
miraculously helpful things for me. She joins our
Stonewall Hospitality Team of Mark, Betty, Tanja, Mildrey, Peter and me
as an Innkeeper-in-Training. We are growing!! Frances is from Basset Virginia and the
plan is for her to move into half of our new Innkeeper Quarters
on the first floor. I expect the final inspection and certificate
of occupancy next week, so it is hoped that she will move into the
southern apartment around the 15th if things go as planned. In my
judgment, she has just the 'right stuff' to be a backup resident
Stonewall Jackson Innkeeper with me. Frances is excited and
filled with energy to be successful and happy in her new career
choice. I am delighted to have her on-board as an Interning
Innkeeper here.

Betty,
The Flower Fairy

No picture could capture our beautiful flower beds this
year. Betty, our Flower Fairy, was a Master
Gardener at Liberty State Park which is right across from
the Statue of Liberty on the shore of the Hudson River.
She is shown her with her Elf Helper Mark who is our
groundskeeper. I have given her free rein to beautify the
grounds with the assistance of Mark and myself. I
imagine she has planted close to 150 flowers and tends
them with loving care every morning for several hours.
In addition, she helps out here when needed, serving our
Breakfast to Remember, and manning the front desk.
Betty is a retired school teacher and has moved into our
Sunnyside Retirement Community just from here. I
have known her for many
years. We are good friends and sometimes traveling
companions.

Did You Know
At the turn of the Century, Harrisonburg was one of
the top cigar manufacturing cities in the South. There
were 8 cigar factories in downtown Harrisonburg. One
was the Virginia Cigar Company that made the very
popular Cuban cigar, 'San Felice' that was made for
"For the Gentleman of Good Taste". On
a personal note, here is a secret from my childhood. My
father would enjoy smoking a San Felice cigar on our porch
every Sunday afternoon as he read the paper. I also
secretly enjoyed surreptitiously smoking them behind the
corn crib. Funny that he never said anything about
missing his good cigars from the box under the car seat of
our 1941 Chevy. I am sure he knew that it was me, perhaps
he thought it might motivate me to grow (like him) to be a
"Gentleman of Good Taste" too. He was a wonderfully good
and wise man, a better father I could not have had!!! He
died 57 years ago, but I still think of him every day and am
thankful....Wayne
A
Stonewall Kitchen Recipe
Wayne's Eggs Benedict~Stonewall Style

Ingredients:
-
One large Slice multigrain toast
-
Two thin slices of tomato
-
Two thin slices of Turner's Sugar Cured Virginia Country
Ham
-
Two Poached eggs
-
Two tablespoons of light McCormick Hollandaise Sauce
-
Tarragon, chives, Balsamic Vinegar
Directions:
Prepare the Hollandaise from one McCormick sauce package
following the directions that call for water, so the sauce
is light. As the sauce thickens, add a teaspoon of Dill as
you stir. Cover and put on very low heat.
Break the two eggs into a rolling boil of water with a good
splash of vinegar added. Put the bread in the toaster.
While the bread is toasting, lightly sauté the tomato slices
in olive oil with a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar.
When the toaster pops up the bread, put the sautéed tomato
slices on the toast side by side. Sprinkle with some
Tarragon. Lay the slices of ham on each tomato. Your eggs
will be done just right as you come to this point, so ladle
them onto the ham and top with the Hollandaise Sauce.
Garnish with chopped Chives. Yummy :-)
You can order this locally produced delicious Virginia's
Finest Ham at
www.turnerhams.com You probably have had this as we
have it as an option substitute for the smoked salmon for
our Nova Scotia Eggs Benedict. The Turner Family has been
making this local product for years. Ron Turner is
presently running the Ham House. A very nice easy guy, he
will see that you get the good stuff. I would use the
uncooked thin sliced, but the cooked is good too. The ham
is hand trimmed and sliced, so there is very little or no
fat and only lightly salted. There is a toll free number
(877-Eat Hams), so give Ron a call and tell him you want
some ham like Wayne gets at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. Give
him my regards when you call.
The Inspector was Here!

We are continuing our run of award
winning ways!!! This past month the Virginia Bed and
Breakfast Association inspector popped in on us, as did AAA,
the Health Department and Fire Marshal. Whew, we received
top ratings by all of them with a special award for being a
"Green Inn". As well, our guests seem to be in, agreement
with the inspectors and writing good reviews of their stay
here. Click on these links and read a few of
them....consumer reviews are one of the better indicators of
how an Inn hosts. I think you will find it very
interesting. There are many sites to post reviews on, but
the major B&B review sites are on
bed&breakfast.com and
tripadvisor.
If you haven't written a review of your stay yet, it
isn't too late. You can do it now, and help us be the
Number 1 B&B in the Shenandoah. When you visit the above
links, just click on 'write a review' and give us your best.
Thanks for giving us good press...your good will is our
mission
