November News for You!

In This Month's Edition:

Happy Thanksgiving

Roger's Big News!

A wonderful  window of business opportunity suddenly opened for me.  The local very successful Sears Roebuck Franchise unexpectedly was put up for sale at a very good price.   Seizing the moment, I have made the jump and parachuted into a new business career as owner/manager of our local Sears Store.
As you might guess, I am conflicted with eagerness for my new career and reluctance to leave my old comfortable and enjoyable life as an Innkeeper at the Inn.

I especially will miss being host to all of you but I will frequently be dropping in for morning coffee and see that Wayne, Jeff and Rudi are maintaining the congeniality and high level of hospitality which I aspired to give every guest. I also will be assisting with the new Website revisions and Web Page Guest Consulting Group, Newsletters, and some other "behind the scenes"  management tasks.  But, I would love to have you drop out and see me at the Sears Store when you visit the Inn.  It is located just up Market Street at the Harrisonburg Crossing Mall at our I-81 Exit 247B.

If you would like to help me with my new adventure, purchase something from my Sears website, Visit
http://www.searsdealer.com

Type in my Store number
3474 and order up!

Meet Your New Hosts!

With Roger's new status as Master Innkeeper Emeritus, and thanks to the internet and the Professional Association of International Innkeepers, I have lucked into a wonderfully well-suited and talented Aspiring couple from Michigan to take up the slack and assist with the Innkeeping.  They are successfully interning in all areas of Innkeeping and by the end of the year, I am sure they will be skilled and comfortable with all aspects of the daily details and tasks of managing the Inn.

Rudi has had some experience working at a B&B in Sedona and has good business management experience.  Jeff is a Renaissance man with cooking, computer, and multiple Handyman skills, making them a great Innkeeping team.  Most importantly they are beautiful people who delight in the adventure of providing the superb Innkeeping hospitality that is our trademark.  In the month they have been at the Inn, they have impressed me and all our guests with their sense of humor and their nurturing aura of warmth and caring as well as many other personal qualities and  special aptitudes they have for an outstanding career as Master Innkeepers.  They are looking forward to meeting you on your next visit and being your superb host and friend!

Wayne

"Greetings Stonewall Jackson Inn Family,

It’s our pleasure to introduce ourselves to you, we are Jeff & Rudi Ishaya, your new Innkeepers at the Stonewall Jackson Inn.  We are very excited to have you as our guests and to get to know you personally, when you visit our area.  To tell you a bit about ourselves, we have hosted and taught at various meditation retreat centers across the United States.  Some of these locales included the Seattle, Sedona, Santa Fe & Asheville areas.  Rudi also has previous experience as an Innkeeper while Jeff has served as a caregiver in residential homes.

We will be happy to hear from you and be delighted to get to know all of our new ‘Stonewall’ Family!"

Wayne's Adventures

Booo!

As you know,  I had hoped to move in my Attic/Penthouse with Audrey (our lovely Ghost) by my October birthday.  But, finishing it has been a slow go due to material and  subcontractor delays. Nothing new to anyone who has tried to coordinate an unusual renovation project.  Currently, Audrey and I are shooting for Thanksgiving for the Certificate of Occupancy from the City Building Inspection Office.
If we can make it, you can join us.   We will roast a turkey, make pumpkin pie and give thanks together.  RSVP :-)

The good news is.....we have taken advantage of the above delays to completely replace our outside Paradise Cafe Deck with spiffy new maintenance free composite decking along with rails and pickets.  As well, we have rough plumbed and framed the first floor for our new Innkeepers two bedroom/bath apartment, office space and laundry.   In the process we are replacing climate control equipment on the first two floors with individual zones for each room as we did on the top two floors. Target completion date for this project is Ground Hog Day.  lololo

Oh, those Sheets!

Greg and Libby Johnson live in Lewisburg, West Virginia.  Greg is a writer of novels and  a playwright while Libby is a Special Education Specialist in the Greenbrier County Schools.  Greg recently wrote a well received play based on P. Buckley Moss's school life experience titled "Tuesday's Child" .  Moss is Learning Disabled (dyslexic), but grew to be a very successful Shenandoah Valley artist.  You have seen many of her paintings hanging in our Inn, (along with Audrey's self-portrait).

Being regular family at the Inn, Greg and Libby have repeatedly enjoyed our luxury cotton wrinkle-free sheets. (See our gift corner or on-line store). As many others, they have thrown away their old sheets and have bought Stonewall Sheets to enjoy every night.   Over the past year, they have bought multiple sets of our Stonewall sheets for themselves and as gifts for their friends and family.  They are so enthusiastic and in love with our sheets, Greg and Libby sat down and wrote a clever poetic note of their appreciation for our contribution to their constant "Night's Delight" at their home.  You can do the same.   With their permission,  Here it is.....I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

An Ode to Our Luxury Sheets!
By Greg and Libby Johnson

Some say life's a spiritual quest
An earthly toil, a heavenly rest
Meanwhile we sleep in earthly suites
Searching for the perfect sheets

Martha Stewart and J. C. Penney
Are only two of the countless many
Who've sold us linens promising blisses
And tucked us in with threadbare kisses

Our patience and our sheets were thin
Until a fateful night at a Harrisonburg inn
In a bedroom fit for a prima donna
 We discovered 600-count Nirvana

At breakfast we pursued the mystery
And now our restless nights are history
We¹re contentedly awaiting our eternal fate
Enjoying heaven at a discount rate

We are Certified Virginia Green

"Virginia is for Lovers" for sure, but our beautiful state is also dedicated to conservation and minimize negative environmental impact practices.  The Commonwealth has recently established a very active Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) whose mission is to conserve our natural resources and to minimize practices that have negative environmental impact.  The program initiative is called "Virginia Green".  Businesses that are committed to their initiatives and standards qualify for certification.  We qualify because of our Optional Linen Service, Recycling, Water saving laundry and showers, and Energy Star Saving practices and equipment.  We have just invested $50,000 to replace all our heating/cooling climate control equipment with units that exceed energy consumption standards. As a bonus, every room is a zone, has a thermostat and is guest controlled.  Now rooms will be heated/cooled to guest comfort and will revert to low or no energy consumption when the room is unoccupied. It just makes good sense and captures the best of everything, comfort and conservation for everyone!  If you are interested the Department of DEQ has a website you might visit.  www.deq.virginia.gov/p2/lodging  You will see us listed there as being Certified "Virginia Green".  Look for our Certificate located the kitchen next time you come, and enjoy your room at a comfortable temperature of your choosing!!

Travel Tip

What should I do to keep my property safe while I'm traveling?

  • You might want to turn your refrigerator to its lowest setting.
  • Turn water heater down to the lowest setting.
  • Turn your heat down or off in spring or fall. Be sure to leave the house warm enough in the winter. You may want to reduce your bills, but you may need to keep the house from getting too cold to protect your pets and water pipes.
  • Leave shades or drapes as you normally do.
  • Lock all doors and windows including basement & garage.
  • Unplug electronic items, such as, your computer to protect them if you have a storm while you’re gone. Remember to unhook your phone line from the modem. Unfortunately, you may have to leave it all hooked up if your computer is your only answering machine. Make sure your surge protectors are properly installed.
  • Pack the car inside the garage, with the door down, so people driving by won’t find out you’re leaving.
  • Disconnect the garage door. Unplug it if you can, don’t pull the fuse for the garage door until you verify the fuse isn’t hooked up to something that needs to stay on, such as, your refrigerator or maybe a freezer in the garage.

 Did you know?

Thanksgiving was held twice in 1815!

Thanksgiving was a centuries-old tradition held by most cultures around the world. After the autumn harvest, communities held 3-day-long feasts, sharing meat, bread and beer. Today, Thanksgiving is known best as an US National holiday. The first US Thanksgiving was held between 21 September and 11 November 1621 in Massachusetts by 50 Plymouth Pilgrims and their 90 Wampanoag neighbors. After that, Thanksgiving was held fairly randomly. Thanksgiving days were proclaimed annually by the US Congress from 1777 to 1783 which, except for 1782, were all celebrated in December. George Washington declared Thanksgiving in 1789 and 1795, and John Adams in 1798 and 1799. James Madison declared Thanksgiving twice in 1815. None of these were celebrated in the autumn.
The next national Thanksgiving was declared only in April 1862, by Abraham Lincoln. In 1863, he declared Thanksgiving for 6 August, and for the last Thursday in November. He went on to declare a similar Thanksgiving observance in 1864, establishing a precedent that was followed by Andrew Johnson in 1865 and by every subsequent president. After a few deviations of the day of celebration - Thanksgiving was held on 7 December in 1865, and 18 November in 1869 - the last Thursday in November was proclaimed as the national Thanksgiving day, but still not a officially holiday. Thanksgiving remained a custom unsanctified by law until President Roosevelt signed a bill on 26 November 1941 that established the fourth Thursday in November as the national Thanksgiving public holiday.
Turkey is the traditional dish for the Thanksgiving feast. In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the Thanksgiving celebrations. There is no official reason or declaration for the use of turkey. They just happened to be the most plentiful meat available at the time of the first Thanksgiving in 1621, starting the tradition.

And now you know!
