Wayne's Adventures

I'm off again!! It's the season for weddings! The latest "in-thing" is to tie the knot in some exotic location at a luxury resort, and the last week in May I will be doing just that. No, I am not the groom :-), my bachelor status of 30 years still endures, but you never know...I've had a few close calls! tee hee

I am going to my grand niece's (Brandi Engel) knot-tying bash in the Dominican Republic at the posh http://www.paradisuspalmareal.travel/ resort. The celebration will go on for a week, so it might be like a Greek Wedding or Roman orgy. Everyone will have a pass to all the resources of the resort and it is all inclusive, food and drinks included! Brandi has fallen in love with Charley, an Award winning Chef (not too shabby) and they are a handsome well-matched couple. I plan to go deep sea fishing among other things! Of course, many of my wild type relatives will be there, so it should be quite an exciting adventure. The Innkeeper News

Tanja is her name (pronounced Tanya), as she is from the Republic of South Africa (RSA). She speaks Asrikaans, Dutch and learned English at the age of 19 to become a corporate travel agent in Pretoria, RSA. With her combination of beauty, brains and personality, it is not surprising that several years ago a local Chiropractor Patrick Keefe was smitten. So she now is Mrs. Keefe! But, she is now also my part-time Personal Assistant, Office Manager as well as a back-up Innkeeper to both Peter and me. She will probably answer the phone when you call and give you some delightful conversation with her pleasant voice and endearing Dutch accent. (I love to hear her say Yaheess (yes))! She provides a much need touch of class and great feminine aura to the place as Peter and I are a little on the Peter Pan flaky side; left over hippies from the Doo-Wop days :-). She is a great Wendy for my adventurous Peter Pan side. Like my Innkeeper/Chef Peter, she is easy to love and loyal in character, I am blessed!!!

144th Anniversary Battle of New Market Reenactment Slated for May 17-18, 2008

Some 2,000 Civil War reenactors are expected to take part in the 144th anniversary reenactment of the Battle of New Market, May 17-18, 2008. The event, held at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, is the oldest battle reenactment in the nation, and one of few held on the original site. In addition to demonstrating Union and Confederate military tactics and camp activities, historical interpreters will portray civilian life during the Civil War era, including medical treatment, domestic crafts, and agricultural work.

�Put the boys in, and may God forgive me for the order.�� With these words, Confederate General John C. Breckinridge ordered 257 cadets of the Virginia Military Institute into combat during the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. Breckinridge�s 4,000-man army, including the cadets, went on to defeat a Union force of over 6,000 under General Franz Sigel in one of the south�s last significant victories of the Civil War. Overall, the Confederates suffered 531 casualties, compared to 841 for the Union force. Ten VMI cadets were killed or mortally wounded.

The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is a National Historic Landmark administered by the Virginia Military Institute and includes the Bushong Farm, where the family hid as the fighting raged around them, and the Hall of Valor Museum, which interprets the battle and the military history of the Civil War in Virginia. Both sites will be open free of charge to persons purchasing reenactment tickets. ($10)

The reenactment literally �starts with a bang� at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 16 with an artillery duel in the town of New Market. A Union battery positioned along Old Cross Road (Rt. 211) will exchange fire with Confederate guns on Shirley�s Hill to the southwest. Both batteries will occupy positions similar to those taken at the start of the battle in 1864. On Saturday, May 17, there will be living history presentations throughout the day on the battlefield and around the Bushong Farm. At noon, the Stonewall Brigade Band of Staunton, Virginia will present a concert of Civil War music outside the Hall of Valor Museum. Organized in 1855, the band won fame as part of the Stonewall Brigade, named for its first commander, Gen. Thomas J. �Stonewall� Jackson. A Tactical Battle Reenactment will take place Saturday at 2:00 PM. Activities continue on Sunday, May 18 with a Civil War period church service and living history programs. The reenactment of the Battle of New Market occurs at 1:30 PM. Enjoying a "Breakfast to Remember"

The Stonewall Jackson Brigade is now deployed in Iraq. Yes, the Brigade is alive, well, and is carrying Jackson's colors with all the legendary spirit for which this historic Brigade is famous! In real time, this past month we had a happy, but combat weary Brigade soldier return from his active duty to meet and stay with his parents here at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. What a happy reunion it was!

He was quick to tell me that the Brigade remains actively proud of it's heritage and reputation for fierce battle engagements, loyalty to the flag and it's commanders. The Brigade's mission is to protect supply convoys from IUD's and terrorist attack. He is SPC. Jermy Green and he has just completed his enlistment and a 2 year tour of duty. He really loves the Shenandoah, plans to settle here and attend James Madison University this fall. What an adjustment that will be for this fine lad....I shall be there for him if needed! I thanked him in the name of all of our Stonewall Family for his Military Service on our behalf.

A Night's Delight............

Finally, "A Night's Delight" At Harrisonburg's Finest (Wayne's Choice)!

I have selected 4 locally owned restaurants that I have invited to partner with us to insure the "Night's Delight" dining part of our mission motto "A Night's Delight ~ A Breakfast to Remember". When I refer a guest to a restaurant, I give them the guarantee that if the restaurant is not as I have described, and if they are not totally pleased with the food and service, they stay the night free, on me. I have had that happen only once in the eight years we have been operating, and believe me, I had a quick conference with the owner/Chef.

Thus, I have settled on these restaurants as providing the very best value, food and service; each offer a different venue, atmosphere and cuisine. Some have entertainment, some just quiet intimate dining, all but The Copper Kettle are within walking distance from The Inn. They are, in my current judgment, each the best in their class. I eat at all of them at least once a month for a first hand, in-your-face, real time check out experience, to insure that I am up-to-date and confident of my guidance in assisting you with restaurant selection.

But, most importantly, they have agreed to provide you, our guests, VIP special attention. Exceptional food, service, and bonus surprises when you make "Stonewall" reservations through us and present your Stonewall room key to the Maitre D and waiter.. Sometimes it might be a nice discount on your check, or perhaps a free dessert or appetizer, or a complimentary glass of wine or cup of coffee. All designed to give you a dining experience that you would like to insure your having a Stonewall "Night's Delight" dining experience.

The restaurants are: The Clementine Cafe, The Joshua Wilton House, La Italia and The Copper Kettle at Bryce Resort. I will begin to feature each restaurant with menu, entertainment and other news.

This month, the John Jorgensen Gypsy Jazz group will pack em in at Clementine's and they will be staying with us again. (www.ClementineCafe.com & www.johnjorgenson.com ) They played to a full house last year at the beautiful downtown Court Square Theater (another one of our partners). They are very good, and Clementine has a great intimate stage for them. It will be a guaranteed "Night's Delight" for any Gypsy Jazz lover.

Come stay with us and meet the band at our "Breakfast to Remember" and enjoy Clementine's gourmet dinner cuisine. While the band entertains, you must have one of Amanda's super special mixed drinks or enjoy one of our good mellow Virginia wines. For those of you that are going to take advantage of Wayne's Battle Reenactment Discounted rooms (see above), all this will occur the night of the Battle Reenactment. An unbeatable weekend combo of good food and fun!

Travel Tips
If you're planning a Caribbean cruise from June through November you should know that you will be cruising during hurricane season. Why would you choose to cruise during hurricane season? Price is one reason. Typically your best deals are during the fall months from late August to mid December.

Statistically speaking, the chance that your particular cruise is going to be affected by a hurricane is slim. However, it does happen. Cruising during these months requires you to be flexible. Itineraries can be disrupted by even the mere threat of a storm. Usually the cruise line whose Eastern Caribbean itinerary appears to be in the path of the storm will simply switch over to the Western Caribbean schedule and vice versa. If the cruise line can't find a port, then the ship spends those days at sea. You will not get a refund for the missed ports of call, as the cruise lines reserve the right to change the itinerary. The cruise lines' strategy has always been to avoid a storm, and they have specific hurricane storm emergency response plans to help them do this.

Best thing to do if you're cruising during this time is to plan ahead. Arrive at the port of embarkation at least one day prior to departure in case difficulties arise, especially if you're cruising out of Florida. Also prepare for the possibility that you might arrive home a day or two late. The ship will wait out at sea if the hurricane is threatening Florida.

Buy insurance, whether through the cruise line or an independent provider - and make sure that the policy covers disruption in case of weather-related events. If the cruise is actually canceled, you will get a refund. However, it's very rare for the cruise lines to cancel a cruise.
