September News for You!

 In This Month's Edition:

Happy Back to School!

 Wayne's Adventures

Fifty years of Marriage!  Yep, a Golden Wedding Anniversary deserves a “Celebration to Remember”, and I am of the age that many of my friends are doing just that.  So, this past month I took three days off and, as we had promised,  my “Flower Fairy” Betty & I drove to Downsville, New York (aka as the sticks of the Finger Lake region) for such a celebration.  Don (Betty’s brother) and wife Chris threw a 50th Bash to Remember for themselves at their home on the Delaware River. Attending were thirty of their most intimate friends that they made together along the path of their marital journey.  I am pleased to be one of them. They put us up at (of course) at a Bed and Breakfast, The Victoria Rose in Downsville which has one Stoplight:). Here is their website www.victoriarosebnb.com , take a look.
A v
ery interesting place & Innkeepers (the Benzingers), but that’s another story:)

While there, the real exciting thing was, that I found a very old piece of framed (12x14) artwork depicting “Lee at Appomattox”.  The artist’s signature is  Carl Guther   I have never seen or read about this picture before anywhere. It is a beautifully detailed shaded tintype with Lee reclining on a log, leaning against Traveler with his surrender sword.  You must see the posture and expression to appreciate how Guther captured the melancholic last moment of his military career. I will hang it by the Guest Book, take a look at it.  Does anyone know the picture??? Google doesn’t seem to …lololo. Let me know please, it might be worth a fortune, (I hope)!!

The Innkeeper News

Heavenly!  ,,.is my feeling with having Tanja and Frances at my elbow as Innkeeping assistants.  Tanja functions beautifully as a Executive Assistant and Frances is moving rapidly in the learning curve as an interning Innkeeper with me.  Frances can cook and clean like a merry maid and truly is my (Peter Pan) Wendy.  And since she lives here in the Innkeeper’s quarters, I can now have an occasional  dinner out at one my chosen Restaurant partners and/or visit my Chalet Home at Bryce Mountain Resort for an overnight or weekend. Tanja keeps me on task and relieves me of much of the day to day management detail tasks. Soon I hope to leave the Inn to them and again take some weeks to travel and visit friends and family.

Guests of the Month

The Rosenthal Family

Look who dropped in for The Stonewall Jackson Experience this month!

These beautiful people are Anthony Rea, Ashlee, Anne and Mike Rosenthal (and Wayne).  If Ashlee looks like Anne and Mike, she has good DNA reasons!  Mike is a serious fly fisherman and comes to the Valley to fish with the excellent guides at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing Shop  Mossy Creek is our partner, so Mike has stayed with us quite a few times when the fishing is good.    But this time, he brought the family for a three day vacation and didn’t wet a flyJ!  What a treat for them AND us.  They did hikes in the Shenandoah National Park off the Skyline Drive, visited Caverns, Battlefields, and took in an early Wine tasting festival with good live music.  They enjoyed the fine gourmet dinner dining with each of our carefully selected restaurant partners; Clementine’s, LaItalia, and The Joushua Wilton to enhance their “Night’s Delight”, and Wayne prepared a “Breakfast to Remember” every morning! Mike and Anne live in Stanford, California; Ashlee and Anthony live in the Washington, D.C.

Poet's Corner

My Nights at The Stonewall Jackson Inn

by Cathy Farrar

Cathy is an “expert” in English under contract with Rosetta Stone.  She has stayed with us for the last two weeks while reviewing the English in the  foreign language learning modules for that company.  Cathy has taught English in China and several other countries and is gifted in personality as well as in languages.  She dashed this poem off in just a few minutes one evening and gave it to me at breakfast.  We would be happy to publish your Inn related poetry as well, just send it to Wayne.

I lie between those luxury sheets
The night noises continuous symphony
Fall locusts and crickets
Long, long, short, long
In a major key, the train passes through.
Outside my window, the big Magnolia
Whispers provocative  history with each breeze
Crinkly grey bark wrapping so many years

Suddenly a Cardinal couple loudly declare the morning.
Night’s Delight ends with kitchen sounds
The aromas of perking coffee and frying bacon
Hunger awakens for the Breakfast to Remember
Life is good…
Between those luxury sheets

 Did You Know?

When I bought the Inn from Audrey Long's estate in 1988, there were homeless people living in the Carriage Barn and the house was inhabited by a squatting mystic cult who held séances & such in the attic where I now live.

The circular driveway and the Portico Cher were used as a drive-thru dope drop & dispensary. The grounds were a jungle of scrub trees, bushes, weeds and the like.  It had not been cared for since Audrey had developed a slow growing brain tumor and was moved to Long Island to be with her husband, Admiral Anderson for care.   I know because I lived next door to the Inn for 13 years before it came up for sale via Audrey's estate.  It took Roger and me 3 years and $$$ to completely renovate and restore it, bringing it up to code as it now stands. We've been working & spending money on it ever since lololo.

In 1991, I moved into the Grant Suite and opened as an upscale "boarding house" known as The Sanctuary Guest House.  I rented  the rooms by the month or year to Visiting JMU Professors and Scholars, Auditors, Attorney's and the like.  At the turn of this century, the City Zoning Regulations were finally amended to allow B&B's to operate in residential areas under a Special Use Permit.  We immediately applied and were granted permission, with restrictions, to open The Stonewall Jackson Inn ~ Bed and Breakfast. This month we are celebrating our 8th year of operation. My how time :)! If these walls could talk!!   Some of you were among our very first Guests, many have recently joined us. Our Stonewall Brigade family now numbers over 12,000, and is still growing by leaps and bounds.

And now you know!

Travel Tips

To get cash, use an ATM. Your bank may have agreements with foreign banks; Bank of America, for one, belongs to the Global ATM Alliance, which means its customers can make free withdrawals from over 30,000 ATMs in eight countries. Use credit cards to make purchases (if you have more than one, figure out which has the lowest conversion fee). In some countries, they'll print your account number on the receipt, so don't blithely toss it in the trash. For emergencies, it helps to bring a few hundred dollars in traveler's checks.

Recipe of the Month

The Stonewall "Breakfast to Remember" Open-faced Sandwich

 Ingredients (per Sandwich)
One and a half slices of good course grain toast
2 tbs of soft cream cheese blended with an equal amount of Smucker's Orange Marmalade to make an easy spread
2-3 slices of wild smoked salmon or Sugar dry cured Virginia Ham
3 eggs scrambled Stonewall Style (see last month's archived August,2008 Newsletter click the Link: http://www.stonewalljacksoninn.com/Newsletter_archive.shtml)
2 tsp each of finely chopped Sweet Vidalia onion (or Chives) and fresh tomato
1/4 cup of shredded mild a cheese, I use Swiss
1/4 sp of Tarragon
White pepper/salt to taste (Black pepper will be too bitter for the delicate flavors of the salmon and egg)

Procedure:

Chop the onion/chives and tomato, blend and put aside to mellow
Toast the Grain Bread and spread a generous amount of the Cream Cheese/Orange marmalade mixture on each.
Lay the salmon/ham on the toast,  then put the plate in a warm oven. 190F
Prepare to scramble the eggs Stonewall style but blend-in the onion/chives/tomato just after pouring the egg wash into the skillet.

Take the now warm sandwich plate out of the oven, top warmed meat with the Stonewall Scrambled Eggs, cover lightly with the shredded cheese, sprinkle the Tarragon, garnish with tomato slices and parsley. Serve as a “Breakfast to Remember”, (give us credit):)!

The Premium Weekend “Skinny”

Our Stonewall Family is growing at a torrid pace!  So is JMU, EMU, Bridgewater College, and our community in general.  Alas, there are not enough guest rooms to accommodate all of our “frequent stay” family members on special Premium Weekends like, Homecoming, Family, Graduations, Holiday weekends, and the like.  Of course, we want to take care of our most loyal family members, those that have repeatedly  patronized the Inn. So, here is the “skinny” on how we handle the situation.
All Premium Weekends are blocked-out from on-line and phone reservations as soon as the dates for that weekend is set so no reservations can be made.
You must call us and request to be put on a wait list for a reservation for that weekend.    We maintain a notebook of “wait” lists for each Premium Weekend.  There two lists for each Premium Weekend.  One list is for our “frequent stay” Stonewall Family Members (S), one is for Wannabe Family Members (W).  When you phone us with a reservation request for a Premium Weekend, your name, telephone, number of rooms/people is entered on the applicable list, S or W, on the date of your call.
One can move from the W-list to the S-list by staying with us prior to the January
of the Year of the Premium Weekend.  Once you stay with us you will be on the S list forever.   Our reservation system provides us a record of  every stay for every guest.  So in January, we generate a list of the number of stays for everyone on the “S” reservation request list.  The number of stays is the first criteria that determines your rank on the list with the date of your reservation request as the second criteria.
We then start calling from the top of the list and continue
until all rooms are sold.  You have 24 hours from the time we call you to respond and pay for your room.  There is a $50 @ night surcharge for such weekend, and your payment is refundable on the following conditions.  On your instructions,  we will try to resell your reservation by going to the list.   If reselling is successful, we then refund the entire amount you paid, less the usual $25 cancellation fee.  We must be the reseller as reservations are NOT transferable.  If you are not successful in obtaining a room here at the Inn, we will do everything we can to find you suitable lodging elsewhere.
The bottom line is:  The more
frequently you stay, the higher is your rank on the list!
